Thank you page scripts stopped working after Shopify’s upgrade

Shopify replaced the Thank you and Order status pages in every store. Code that used to run there, from survey widgets to conversion snippets, stopped running when a store moved to the new pages.

We went through this ourselves. The first version of Post Purchase Surveys showed its survey with a script tag on the Order status page. On the new pages, that script never loads, so we rebuilt the survey as a checkout block. This guide is what we learned along the way.

What changed

Shopify set August 26, 2026 as the deadline to upgrade the Thank you and Order status pages. Stores that hadn’t upgraded by then were upgraded automatically. Some stores, including Shopify Plus stores, moved earlier.

The old pages had two ways to add code, and neither works on the new pages:

  • The Additional scripts box in your checkout settings, where you or your agency pasted code: conversion tags, affiliate snippets, chat widgets, survey embeds.
  • Script tags, which apps added through Shopify’s API without you seeing any code. Many survey and review apps worked this way.

Nothing shows an error when this code stops. Your customers see a normal Thank you page. You notice later, usually when survey answers or ad conversions drop to zero.

What replaces what

If the old code…Use this on the new pages
Showed something to the buyer: a survey, a message, an offerAn app block, added in the checkout editor
Reported a purchase to an ad or analytics platformThe platform’s official Shopify app (Google & YouTube, Facebook & Instagram, TikTok and others), or a pixel under Settings → Customer events
Changed how the page looksThe branding settings in the checkout editor

Don’t paste old snippets into a custom pixel and expect them to work. Custom pixels run in a sandbox: they receive events such as “checkout completed”, but they can’t read or change the page. A snippet that looked for an element on the page, or drew a banner, will do nothing there.

Recover your old Thank you page scripts

Before you rebuild anything, find out what used to run. Shopify’s help center has a guide to reviewing and replacing additional scripts. Also check:

  • copies of the code in your agency’s or developer’s notes, or in your own documents;
  • the setup emails or help pages of each tool, which usually show the snippet you were told to paste;
  • your apps: if one of them used a script tag, its listing or support team can tell you whether a checkout block is available now.

Make a list of each item, what it did, and its replacement from the table above.

Bring your Thank you page survey back

You need a survey app that provides a checkout block. Once it is installed, add the block to the Thank you page in the checkout editor, add it again to the Order status page, and save. The setup guide has each click.

A one-question survey on a Shopify Thank you page asking “How did you hear about us?” with six options.
A survey block on the Thank you page. One question at a time.

If you are switching tools, write down two things from the old survey first:

  • The questions and the answer options, word for word. If you keep the same options, this year’s answers stay comparable with last year’s.
  • Any order tags the old survey added. Shopify Flow workflows, saved order filters and reports may depend on those exact tags.

If you used Post Purchase Surveys before

The current version uses a checkout block. Your survey, your order tags and your answer history copy over, and the app stays installed. You still need to add the block in the checkout editor and switch the survey on, because only you can place blocks on those pages. Moving from the old app lists the three steps.

Post Purchase Surveys is built as a checkout block for the new Thank you and Order status pages. Get it on the Shopify App Store, add the block, and your survey is back.
